During this week, members of the National Safe Boating Council, including the Coast Guard Auxiliary U.S. Power Squadrons, State Boating Law Administrators, Army Corps of Engineers, American Red Cross  and other groups provide extensive media coverage, local exhibits, and special programs on safe boating.

Boating and Safety Courses

South Shore Power Squadron - "Boat Smart Classes"
All Sessions are 3 classes and 4th Class is the final exam
May Class Starts - Monday May 12th, 2003 –Registration 7 PM
Class dates - Mondays May 19th, June 3rd and June 9th.
June Class Starts - Monday June 16th, 2003- Registration 7 PM
Class dates- Wed, June 18th, Mon. June 23rd and Wed. June 25th.
July Class Start Monday, June 30th, 2003- Registration 7 PM
Class dates Wed. July 2nd, Mon. July 7th  and Wed. July 9th.

Old Field PS & Port Jeff Offer Young Boater's Course
Registration for the New York State Young Boater's Safety Course
co-sponsored by the Old Field Power Squadron and the Village of Port
Jefferson will take place at the course's first session on Saturday, March 1
at 9:00 a.m. at Port Jefferson Village Hall. The four-session course is for
10 to 18-year-olds and is held on Saturday mornings: March 1, 8, 15, and 22,
2003
. Fee is $5 per student.

Sewanhaka Power Squadron Announces Safe Boating Courses
A number of Safe Boating Courses are being offered at these listed
locations. The Boat Smart four-week courses cost $25; the other courses run
seven weeks and cost $30.
Sat., March 1 - Boat Smart Course at Oceanside H.S., Skillman Ave.,
Oceanside. Four weekly sessions starting 10 a.m.
Thursday, March 6 - Boat Smart Course (four weeks) at New Hyde Park H.S.,
500 Leonard Blvd, NHP. Register 2/27/03. A second four-week Boat Smart
Course course starts Thursday, April 10.
Mon., March 10 - this seven-week course is held in the Oceanside H.S.,
starting at 7:30 p.m. and costs $30.
Wed., March 19 - this seven-weeker is held at the Stewart School, Stewart
Ave., Garden City. Starts 7:30 p.m. and costs $30.
Mon., March 24 - this seven-week course is held at Herricks Community Ctr,
Herricks Rd, NHP. Starts 7:30 p.m. and costs $30. More details from Joe Lau

Great South Bay P.S. Safe Boating Courses
These courses are open to adults and Young Boaters (10-14 yrs). The Adult
Safe Boating Course runs seven weeks starting Tuesday, March 4 from 8 to 10
p.m. at the West Islip Community Center, 90 Higbie Lane, West Islip. It
costs $35 for materials and $6 each for plotters and dividers. This Adult
course meets March 4, 11,18, 25, April 1,8 and 15. The Young Boaters Boat
Smart Course runs four weeks and meets on March 4, 11, 18 and 25. More

Flotilla 1-1 of Babylon Boating Safety Class
This nine-session class will convene at the West Marine store, Babylon, and
start on Tuesday, March 4 through Tuesday, April 29, 2003. Hours are 7:30
p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The course fee is $45 for books, charts and related
materials. Class is limited to 25 students. Youngsters between 12 and 18
years are invited to attend. More details from West Marine at 631-422-3300.

Captree Power Squadron's Public Boating Classes
A course will convene at Amityville High School on Merrick Road, Amityville.
Registration is on Wednesday, March 5. Starts 7:30 p.m.
Another two-session course will be offered at Lindenhurst Middle School,
Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst. Registration for its 1st session will be on
Wednesday, March 5; for its 2nd session on Wednesday, April 16. Starts 7:30
p.m. Another course will be held at Farmingdale Howitt Middle School on Van
Cott Avenue, Farmingdale. Registration is on Tuesday, March 11. Course
starts at 7:30 p.m. Amityville and Farmingdale courses will charge a books
and materials fee of $54; Lindenhurst will charge $35 for abbreviated
versions of the courses. Details at 631-842-8450.

USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 1-2 Amityville Offers Course
A three-session Boating Safely Course sponsored by Flotilla 1-2 Amityville
will be offered March 6, 13 and 20, 2003 at Copiague High School, Dixon
Avenue, Copiague running each evening from 7 to 10 p.m. Basic fee is $40 for
materials. An additional registration fee of $3 goes to Copiague H.S. Adult
Education. Course is open to all adults and children 10 years and older.
Note please: children under 17 must be accompanied by parent or guardian and

Peconic Bay P.S. Boat Smart Course
A four-session, eight-hour Boat Smart class will be given by the Peconic Bay
Power Squadron starting Wednesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in the Hampton Bays
High School. Dates are March 19, 26, April 2 and 9. Hours are 7 to 9 p.m.
Cost is $35 per person for course materials. To register call Andy Pollio

USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 1-2 Offers Boating Safely Courses
The first of the Flotillašs Boating Safely Courses runs March 6, 13 and 20
from 7 to 10 p.m. at Copiague High School. Learn boating safety skills and
seamanship. Cost is $40 per person and covers a workbook and adult education
registration fee. Pre-registration required. Contact Arnold at 631-225-0922.
The second course runs four sessions and starts Wednesday, March 19 at 7
p.m. in Hampton Bays High School. Hours are 7 to 9 p.m. and cost is $35 per
person for materials
 
Boating Safety Course From Flotilla 11-09
Flotilla 11-09 of the USCG Auxiliary is offering a seven-week Boating Safety
Course for both new and veteran boaters. Upon completion, participants will
be awarded certificates and cards of accomplishment. The course starts April
1, 2003
at Floyd Bennett Field's Ryan Visitor Center, Brooklyn, NY 11234.
Registration at 7:30 p.m. Text and materials furnished for a fee. More

USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 1-4 Giving Three Courses
The Flotilla will offer a four-session Adult Safe Boating Course at the
Lindenhurst Middle School on March 27, April 3, 10, and May 1. Fee $45. A
six-session Young Boaters Course will meet March 27, April 3, 10, and May 1,
8, and 15.
Both courses' hours will be 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The third course is
a one-session, eight-hour Adult course on March 22 at BoatUS in West

South Shore P.S. & LIMEC Offer Three Springtime Boating Courses
The South Shore Power Squadron (Baldwin) and the Long Island Marine
Education Center (LIMEC) in Freeport will offer conjointly three Safe
Boating Course this coming spring. For dates and starting times, please call

Hempstead Bay P.S. Offers Boat Smart Course
The Hempstead Bay Power Squadron will present a five-session Boat
Smartcourse at Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School starting Tuesday,
March 18 at 7:45 p.m. The course will cover boat terms and types, personal
watercraft, boat handling, required equipment, safety standards, federal,
state and local regulations, aids to navigation, navigation rules,
emergencies and marine radiotelephone. Youngsters 18 years of age and
younger are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. The sessions have
been designed to be useful to all boaters, from the person operating a
personal watercraft to the skipper of a family cruiser or a sailing
enthusiast. The course is approved by the National Association of State
Boating Law Administrators and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard for the
National Recreational Boating Safety Program. The instruction is free; the
course material costs $30. Squadron Educational Officer P/C Ann Wellander
will provide additional information and is available at 516-293-7773 or by

SeaSchool Offering Recreational Boating Safety Training
SeaSchool, 2014 Grand Avenue, Baldwin, NY, for more than 27 years one of the
leading institutions for professional mariners, will be offering an
eight-hour recreational boating safety class. The class meets the
educational requirements for New York State and surrounding states. All
boating safety elements will be taught by U.S. Coast Guard licensed
captains, among them ships' masters, ferry captains, tugboat captains,
charter captains and Coast Guard and Navy veterans. For more information on
